Long days and constant pressure take a toll. I help optical professionals manage stress, recognise burnout early, and stay well at work.

Federation Reps may include AI-generated information and career guidance based on publicly available data about the UK optical sector. Their responses are not a substitute for professional advice from a qualified careers advisor, solicitor, or financial adviser. No personal data shared in conversations is stored or retained.
The bigger picture
Working in optics can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be demanding in ways that people outside the industry don’t always see. Long days, constant patient focus, commercial pressure, and the need to stay switched on from start to finish can build up over time.
For many people, the signs are subtle at first. You might feel more tired than usual, a little less patient, or slightly disconnected from the job you once enjoyed. Sometimes it shows up as frustration, sometimes as low energy, and sometimes as that sense of just getting through the day.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. More importantly, it’s something that can be addressed properly.
Where to start
If something feels off, even slightly, it’s worth understanding why.

What I do
My role within the Federation is to help you stay mentally and emotionally well while building a career you actually enjoy.
This isn’t about generic advice or unrealistic ideas that don’t fit into a busy practice. It’s about giving you practical, grounded support that reflects the reality of your working day.
That might mean helping you recognise when stress is starting to build, giving you simple ways to manage pressure during the day, or supporting you through a period where things feel heavier than they should. In some cases, it may involve helping you step back and reassess whether your current role or environment is right for you.
If you ever need support beyond what we offer here, I can also point you towards trusted organisations such as Mind, the NHS, and the Mental Health Foundation.
The aim is always the same. To help you feel more in control, more balanced, and more like yourself again.
The experience
When you access this support, you’ll get guidance that is tailored to you and your situation, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
You’ll start to understand your own patterns around stress and energy, which makes it easier to deal with challenges before they escalate. You’ll also gain practical ways to handle busy days without feeling completely drained, and a clearer sense of how to protect your time and energy outside of work.
For some, the biggest shift comes from having the space to think clearly again. For others, it’s about making a more confident decision about what comes next.
If work is staying in your head after hours, give yourself a clear end to the day.
Even something simple like a short walk, changing environment, or a small routine can help your mind switch off properly. Without that, your brain stays “at work” long after you’ve left.
Small changes like this often make a bigger difference than people expect.
An optometrist was close to quitting but unsure why. We looked at their working week and found the issue wasn’t the job itself, but how the day was structured. A few small changes made a noticeable difference within weeks.
An optical assistant felt overwhelmed but couldn’t explain why. Once we broke things down, it became clear what was driving the pressure. With a few adjustments, things became far more manageable.
A quick insight
Many professionals in optics report struggling to consistently deliver the level of care they want due to workload and pressure. You’re not the only one feeling this.
How I work
I keep things straightforward, honest, and focused on what actually works.
If something in your working environment is contributing to how you feel, we’ll look at it properly. If you need to make adjustments, we’ll work through what that looks like in a realistic way. And if things are generally good but feel heavy at times, we’ll focus on giving you the tools to manage that pressure without it building up.
There’s no judgement here and no expectation to just push through.
