The bigger picture
Leadership is a different kind of responsibility.
You might have been strong in your role, then suddenly you’re responsible for a team, performance, standards, and the overall running of a practice. It’s no longer just about doing your job well. It’s about helping others do theirs.
Some people step into management and figure it out as they go. Others hold back from progressing because they’re not sure they’re ready.
Both are completely normal.
That’s where I come in.
Where to start
If you’re stepping into leadership, or already in it and finding it challenging, it’s worth talking it through properly.

What I do
My role within the Federation is to help you become a confident, capable leader in a way that feels natural and sustainable.
This isn’t about turning you into a completely different person or giving you theory that doesn’t apply in practice. It’s about helping you understand what good leadership looks like in a real optical environment, and how to apply it day to day.
That might mean supporting you as you step into your first management role, helping you handle team challenges, or guiding you to lead with more clarity and consistency.
The experience
When you access this support, you’ll start to feel more confident in your role as a leader.
You’ll understand how to manage different personalities, how to communicate expectations clearly, and how to create a working environment where people perform at their best. You’ll also gain a better sense of how to balance patient care, commercial pressure, and team wellbeing.
For many people, this removes the uncertainty that comes with leadership and replaces it with a clearer sense of direction.
Take a moment to ask yourself:
“Does my team clearly understand what I expect from them?”
If the answer isn’t a clear yes, that’s often the first place to focus.
If any of these apply, it’s a good time to develop your leadership approach.
A practice manager had recently moved into leadership but didn’t feel fully comfortable managing the team. With the right structure and support, they grew into the role quickly and led with more clarity.
An experienced optometrist moved into a leadership position but found managing people more challenging than expected. With practical guidance, they developed a more effective approach.
A quick insight
Most leadership challenges don’t come from lack of ability. They come from not being shown how to lead people properly.
How I work
I’m practical, supportive, and honest.
If something needs addressing in your team, I’ll help you handle it properly. If you’re doing well, I’ll help you build on that. The focus is always on helping you become a leader that people respect and trust.
There’s no expectation to be perfect. Leadership is something you grow into with the right support.
Before you go
A lot of people think they need to feel completely ready before stepping up.
The reality is, most good leaders develop through experience, reflection, and support along the way.
When you understand how to lead people, not just manage tasks, everything changes. Your team performs better, your role feels clearer, and your confidence grows naturally.
