How do I move into management?
Moving into a management or specialist role is one of the most common career goals in optics - and one of the most under-supported. Here's what actually makes the difference.
Most practice manager roles require at least 2–3 years of clinical or supervisory experience. Many practices prefer to promote internally, which means the first step is often making yourself visible as someone with management potential in your current role.
What hiring practices actually look for: a track record of clinical outcomes, evidence of patient relationship management, some experience of team or trainee supervision, and a basic understanding of practice P&L. You don't need a business degree - you need to be able to demonstrate business awareness.
For specialist clinical roles, the requirements differ by specialism. IP prescribing, low vision, paediatric optometry, and contact lens specialisation each have their own qualification pathways through the College of Optometrists or ABDO.
