What career paths are open to me?
Optical careers have more routes forward than most people realise. The most visible path is practice management or ownership - but there are several others depending on what you want from your work.
Specialisation is one of the most rewarding routes. Areas like paediatric optometry, low vision, contact lens practice, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and IP prescribing all offer deeper clinical work and often command higher salaries.
Management is the most common progression for experienced clinicians. Practice manager and area manager roles combine clinical credibility with business leadership. Most require 2–3 years of supervisory experience and a track record of patient outcomes.
Academia and education suits those who want to shape the profession - visiting lecturer roles, pre-reg supervision, and research positions are available through universities and professional bodies.
Practice ownership is the long-term ambition for many. It typically requires 5+ years of clinical experience, business planning skills, and access to finance. It's achievable - but it benefits from preparation.
