We are recruiting for a full-time, permanent Dispensing Optician to join a supportive practice in Gillingham. This position offers a structured pathway to professional qualification, combining distance learning, block release, and hands-on practice experience.
What you'll be doing
- Perform all dispensing requirements including prescription analysis, advising on lens types, styling frames, and taking accurate measurements
- Carry out repairs, adjustments, and fittings in line with supervisory instruction
- Check new orders into the branch, process invoices and credit notes, and chase outstanding deliveries
- Provide administrative back-up to the practice team, including cashing up, processing vouchers, and contact lens ordering
- Promote products and services, maximise the sale of sunglasses and accessories, and assist with stocktaking
- Complete required study materials, attend college block release periods as directed by ABDO, and process coursework
- Act as a keyholder and work within professional guidelines and G.O.C. regulations
What we're looking for
- 5 GCSEs at Grades 4–9 (A–C) including English, Mathematics, and Science, or 5 years optical experience with A–C in Maths and English
- A keen interest in ophthalmic dispensing and a desire to achieve qualification as a G.O.C. registered dispensing optician
- Excellent communication skills with patience, empathy, and a dedication to exemplary patient service
- Commercial awareness and confidence working within a close-knit team
- Ability to commit to 10–15 hours per week of your own time for distance learning coursework
- Ability to attend two block release periods per year at ABDO College in Godmersham, Kent, and undertake full-time training
