About this role
In an optical practice environment similar to Harley Eyecare, a Qualified Dispensing Optician's core function is to translate optometrist prescriptions into high-quality eyewear. This involves consulting with patients to understand their visual needs and lifestyle, guiding them through the selection of suitable frames and advanced lens options. Accurate facial measurements, including pupillary distances and segment heights, are crucial for optimal spectacle performance.
This role requires close collaboration with optometrists and the wider practice team to ensure a seamless patient journey from sight test to dispensing and aftercare. Managing more complex dispensing challenges and providing contact lens aftercare are also key responsibilities. The aim is to deliver a complete and personalised vision solution for every patient.
What working in a role like this could offer you
What working in a role like this could offer you is a pathway for professional growth and varied clinical experience. Opportunities may exist to specialise further in contact lens fitting, or to move into practice management or training roles. Continuous professional development is often supported through Continuing Education and Training (CET) points and assistance with GOC fees.
A role like this could provide exposure to a broad spectrum of dispensing cases, from standard prescriptions to more complex visual requirements. The lifestyle considerations of Braintree, a town offering a balance between community amenities and access to surrounding countryside, can also contribute to job satisfaction.
Requirements
To be considered for a Qualified Dispensing Optician role at a practice like Harley Eyecare, registration with the General Optical Council (GOC) as a dispensing optician (FBDO qualification) is essential. Demonstrable technical proficiency in taking precise measurements, understanding a wide range of lens materials and designs, and expertly fitting and adjusting spectacles is required. Competence in patient communication, offering empathetic advice, and clearly explaining technical information is also vital.
A Contact Lens Optician (CLO) qualification would be advantageous. Further specialist qualifications in areas such as low vision or paediatric dispensing, or experience in practice management, could strengthen an application. A thorough understanding of current optical products and dispensing techniques is expected.
