About this role
In an optical practice environment similar to Delta Optical, the Qualified Dispensing Optician role centres on translating optometrist prescriptions into optimal eyewear solutions. This involves engaging with patients to understand their visual needs and lifestyle, guiding them through frame and lens choices, and taking precise measurements for accurate fitting. Adjusting spectacles to ensure comfort and optimal performance is a key aspect, as is managing more complex dispensing challenges. The QDO works collaboratively with the optometrist and the entire practice team to ensure a seamless and professional patient journey, from initial consultation through to dispensing and aftercare.

Opportunities may arise for specialising in areas like contact lens fitting or progressing into practice management roles. Support for continuing professional development, including funding for CET points and GOC fees, is common. Furthermore, practicing in a location like Canterbury provides access to a pleasant working environment and lifestyle considerations.
Requirements
To be considered for a dispensing optician position at a practice like Delta Optical, registration with the General Optical Council (GOC) as a dispensing optician (FBDO) is essential. Strong technical abilities are needed, including accurate pupillary distance and optical centre height measurements, and a thorough understanding of various lens types. Competence in frame selection, fitting, and adjustment is also crucial. While not always mandatory, a Contact Lens Optician (CLO) qualification would be advantageous. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, coupled with empathy and a patient-centred approach, are vital. Further qualifications in areas such as low vision or paediatric dispensing could strengthen an application.
